Many people use “surge protector” and “power strip” as interchangeable terms — but they’re meaningfully different, and using the wrong one for the wrong device can leave expensive electronics unprotected. This guide clarifies exactly what each device does, when you need each, and the best options at every price point.

Power Strip: Just More Outlets

A basic power strip is an extension cord with multiple outlets. That’s it. A power strip with no surge protection provides:

  • More outlets from a single wall socket
  • A power switch (on some models) to turn all outlets off simultaneously
  • No protection from voltage surges whatsoever

Using a basic power strip for your computer, TV, or other sensitive electronics provides zero protection beyond what the wall outlet itself provides — which is none.

When a power strip is appropriate:

  • Connecting multiple low-sensitivity devices to one outlet (lamps, fans, phone chargers on USB strips)
  • Situations where you specifically want a simple extension without any active components that could fail

When a power strip is NOT appropriate:

  • Any sensitive electronics: computers, TVs, audio equipment, game consoles, NAS drives, routers

Surge Protector: First Line of Defense

A surge protector is a power strip that adds transient voltage surge suppression — typically using metal oxide varistors (MOVs) that divert excess voltage to ground when a surge occurs.

What Surge Protectors Actually Protect Against

Surges they handle well:

  • Minor voltage spikes from utility switching
  • Internal surges from motor cycling (refrigerators, AC, washers)
  • Small to medium surges propagating from utility lines

What they don’t handle:

  • Direct lightning strikes — the MOVs in most surge protectors can’t absorb the energy of a direct lightning strike
  • Extended overvoltage (a power company problem lasting minutes, not milliseconds)
  • Low voltage brownouts and sags — surge protectors don’t address under-voltage events

The best protection strategy: A whole-house surge protector at the panel as the first layer, plus quality surge protectors at individual sensitive equipment as the second layer.

Key Surge Protector Specifications

Joule Rating: The joule rating indicates how much total surge energy the device can absorb over its lifetime. Higher is better, but joule ratings aren’t standardized — a cheap strip can claim high joule ratings while having inferior MOVs.

  • Under 1,000 joules: Minimal protection — avoid for electronics
  • 1,000–2,000 joules: Acceptable for general electronics
  • 2,000–4,000 joules: Good protection for most home applications
  • 4,000+ joules: Best for high-value equipment

Clamping Voltage: The voltage at which the surge protector begins diverting excess energy. Lower is better — the device responds before the connected equipment sees high voltage.

  • 330V: Excellent (common on quality protectors)
  • 400V: Good
  • 500V: Acceptable
  • Above 500V: Poor

Response Time: How quickly the surge protector begins clamping a surge. Most quality devices respond in nanoseconds — fast enough to respond to all but the fastest lightning-induced transients.

UL 1449 Listing: Surge protectors should be UL 1449 listed, which verifies that they meet minimum safety and performance standards. This is a minimum bar, not a quality guarantee, but unlistedd surge strips should be avoided entirely.

Number and Type of Protected Connections: Surges can enter through power lines, telephone lines (landlines), coaxial cable (TV/cable internet), and network (ethernet) connections. A comprehensive surge protector includes protection on all these pathways. If your cable modem connects via coaxial and your router connects via ethernet, look for a surge protector that protects all three (AC power, coax, ethernet).


UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply): Power + Protection + Backup

A UPS is a battery backup device that also provides surge protection and power conditioning. It serves three functions:

  1. Surge protection: Similar to a standalone surge protector, but typically with better voltage regulation
  2. Battery backup: Provides several minutes to hours of battery power when utility power fails — enough to save your work, gracefully shut down, or wait out a brief outage
  3. Power conditioning: Line-interactive and online UPS units regulate voltage (stepping up or down as needed) before it reaches your equipment, protecting against sags and swells in addition to spikes

UPS Topologies

Standby (Offline) UPS: The most common and affordable type. Normally passes utility power directly to connected devices. When utility power fails or surges beyond tolerance, it switches to battery in milliseconds. The brief switchover time (typically 4–20ms) is imperceptible to most equipment. Good for computers and home offices.

Line-Interactive UPS: Adds an autotransformer that regulates voltage — stepping it up during brownouts and down during swells — without switching to battery. Better for areas with frequent voltage fluctuations. The sweet spot between cost and performance for most home use.

Online (Double Conversion) UPS: Continuously converts AC to DC (charging the battery) and DC back to AC. Equipment always runs from the battery — there is zero switchover time and the output is perfectly conditioned regardless of input quality. Best for servers, medical equipment, and applications where any power disruption or voltage imperfection is unacceptable. Most expensive and least efficient.

UPS Capacity: VA and Watts

UPS capacity is rated in VA (volt-amperes) and watts. VA is the apparent power; watts is the real power. The ratio is the power factor.

How to size a UPS:

  1. Add up the wattage of all devices you want to protect and keep running during an outage
  2. Multiply total watts by 1.25 (25% safety margin)
  3. Choose a UPS with a watt rating at or above that number

Example: Computer (300W) + two monitors (60W each) + router (15W) + NAS (50W) = 485W × 1.25 = 606W minimum UPS size. Choose a 700W or 750W UPS.

Run time: More battery capacity = longer run time. Most UPS units are designed for 5–15 minutes at full load — enough to save work and shut down gracefully, not to continue working through extended outages.

Surge Protector Maintenance and Replacement

MOVs in surge protectors degrade with each surge event. The device provides no warning in most cases — it simply stops protecting while still providing power.

Replace surge protectors:

  • Every 2–3 years (regardless of known events)
  • After any major surge event (lightning strike nearby, utility equipment failure, etc.)
  • If the status indicator (on models that have one) shows “no protection”

Better approach: Choose surge protectors with MOV failure indicators (the “protected” LED should be green; “not protected” means replacement is needed). APC and Tripp Lite include these.
