A 4-prong dryer outlet is the modern arrangement because it separates neutral from equipment ground. A 3-prong outlet can remain in some qualifying existing installations, but that does not make the two connections interchangeable or make a cord swap a cosmetic choice.

Before delivery day, identify the receptacle, branch-circuit conductors, dryer model, and manufacturer instructions. The right decision may be a matching listed cord, a circuit upgrade, or correction of a prior unsafe conversion.

The electrical difference in one table

Most conventional North American electric dryers use 120/240-volt power: 240 volts for heating and 120 volts for controls, drum motor, light, or electronics. That is why the neutral matters as well as the two ungrounded conductors.

Why older dryers used three prongs

In the legacy arrangement, the dryer’s metal frame was bonded to the neutral at the appliance. Neutral carried normal operating current, while the same conductor also served the equipment-bonding function under an older exception.

GE Appliances’ 240/208-volt product guidance says that new construction and remodeling have required 4-conductor connections for dryers and similar appliances since the 1996 NEC change. It also explains that qualifying replacement equipment in existing construction may continue using a 3-prong connection.

That exception is not a general authorization to install new 3-wire cable, ignore a present grounding conductor, or use a water pipe as an improvised ground. The electrician and local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) must evaluate the actual circuit and adopted code edition.

Why four prongs are preferred

With a 4-wire connection, the neutral is isolated from the dryer chassis and carries only normal line-to-neutral load current. The separate equipment-grounding conductor bonds the metal frame and provides a fault-current path.

This separation reduces the chance that an open or compromised neutral will place objectionable current or voltage on the appliance frame through the normal bonding arrangement. It also matches the modern principle that neutral and equipment ground remain separate downstream of the service disconnect.

Choose the connection by evidence

1. Read the receptacle face

A common dryer receptacle is either NEMA 10-30 or NEMA 14-30, but damaged, unlisted, miswired, range-style, or improvised receptacles exist. Record the molded configuration and rating. Do not infer wiring behind the wall from the slots alone.

If the face is scorched, cracked, loose, warm, painted, or missing its cover, leave the circuit off. A heavy appliance plug must make a firm, cool connection.

2. Read the dryer instructions

Find the installation manual by exact model number. Confirm supply voltage, branch-circuit rating, approved cord type, strain relief, terminal-block diagram, and the manufacturer’s specific neutral-bond position for 3-wire and 4-wire connections.

GE’s dryer power-cord guidance says the cord must correspond to the home’s supply and recommends against reusing the old dryer’s cord. Other manufacturers may have their own cord kits and instructions.

3. Have the branch circuit verified

A qualified electrician can confirm conductor count and type, equipment-grounding path, receptacle rating, breaker size, conductor condition, box fit, and whether the existing 3-wire installation meets every condition of the locally adopted exception.

Do not install a 4-prong receptacle on a 3-wire circuit just to fit a new cord. The extra slot must connect to a valid equipment-grounding conductor. Do not bridge neutral and ground at the receptacle.

4. Decide whether to retain or upgrade

Cord conversion is more than matching prongs

A safe conversion requires the exact terminal-block arrangement in the dryer manual. The neutral conductor, chassis bond, equipment ground, strain relief, terminal hardware, torque, and cord rating all matter.

Errors can energize the cabinet, overheat the terminal block, or leave the dryer without an effective fault path. Stop if the bonding strap is missing, altered, scorched, or unclear; if conductors are damaged; or if terminal hardware does not match the manual. This is appropriate work for an appliance installer or electrician who is authorized to make the connection.

Delivery-day checklist

Before the installer arrives, record:

  • Dryer manufacturer, model, and nameplate requirements
  • Receptacle NEMA marking and physical condition
  • Breaker directory label and visible rating
  • Existing cord type, without assuming it can be reused
  • Distance from receptacle to the final dryer position
  • Whether remodeling or a new circuit is part of the project
  • Permit or inspection requirements from the local AHJ
  • Who is responsible for the cord, strain relief, connection, and operational test

After connection, the plug should seat fully, the receptacle and cord should remain cool, the dryer should operate without breaker trips, and no neutral-to-frame bond should remain in a 4-wire configuration. Stop immediately for shock sensation, odor, heat, sparking, buzzing, or discoloration.

Use the electrician handoff checklist when the receptacle and dryer do not match. Choose the connection that the verified branch circuit, current dryer manual, and local rules support—not the cord that happens to be on hand.
