1. Check the outage map and nearby homes
Look at the utility outage map and ask a neighbor whether they have a similar problem. A clear map does not rule out a single-customer service failure, so report the outage even if yours is the only address affected.
2. List what works and what does not
Write down affected rooms, receptacles, lights, and major appliances. Note whether the outage began after a storm, utility restoration, digging, tree damage, panel work, or a large load starting. 3. Check accessible GFCIs

4. Look at breaker handles without removing covers
A tripped breaker can rest in a middle position. From outside a dry, intact panel, check for a branch handle that is out of line. If the dead area maps to one clearly labeled circuit and no hazard signs are present, reset that branch breaker fully OFF and then ON once.
Do not remove the dead front. Do not cycle every breaker, and do not repeatedly operate the main to “force” power back. Service terminals may remain energized even when the main is off.
5. Call in the right order
When the pattern spans unrelated circuits, contact the utility first. Why a normal-looking breaker does not clear the system
Branch breakers protect individual circuits. A failed utility fuse, service splice, meter connection, main-breaker pole, or bus connection can interrupt power before or across multiple branch breakers without moving their handles. That is why “no breaker tripped” does not make the problem harmless.
Do not rely on a plug-in voltage reading to clear a service fault. Backfeeding through connected 240-volt equipment can produce misleading readings on the failed leg, and a neutral fault can make voltage change as loads switch.
