A motor draws an inrush current while accelerating, so a small fraction-of-a-second dip confined to nearby lights may be normal. A large dip, dimming that lasts while the appliance runs, lights that brighten elsewhere, or a trend that is getting worse needs diagnosis.

Decision path

  1. Look for danger signs. Burning odor, buzzing at the panel, hot devices, sparking, or simultaneous brightening and dimming means stop the appliance. If safe, switch off its breaker and call an electrician or utility urgently.
  2. Establish scope. Does one lamp, one branch circuit, several rooms, or the entire house change? Ask a neighbour whether utility power also dipped.
  3. Identify the trigger. Record whether HVAC, a well pump, refrigerator, compressor, microwave, welder, or another load starts at the same moment.
  4. Measure duration without opening equipment. A video of the light and appliance startup is safer and more useful than probing the panel.
  5. Arrange the right handoff. Whole-house or phase-to-phase symptoms can involve utility/service equipment; circuit-local symptoms usually begin with an electrician.

Never compensate with a larger breaker. Breakers protect conductors; they do not regulate voltage or increase service capacity.

Branch-circuit drop versus service capacity

Service-load questions are broader: the electrician considers the dwelling’s calculated loads, service rating, conductor and equipment condition, and measured voltage on both legs under load. A new EV charger, heat pump, range, or workshop load may justify a formal panel and load calculation, but adding appliance nameplate ratings directly is not the prescribed calculation.

Record before calling

  • Appliance make/model, nameplate voltage and current, and approximate age
  • Rooms and lamps affected; whether any lights brighten
  • Duration and whether the symptom is new or worsening
  • Breaker trips, panel sounds, storms, utility work, or recent electrical changes
  • A safe video showing the timing
